Onehunga Foreshore Restoration

Looking North toward Hillsborough: new beaches, paths and planting

In the 1970s Onehunga lost it's beachfront when the South-Western motorway was built across the the bay.  The restoration of the Onehunga foreshore has  been lobbied for ever since by residents and supporters of the community.  Construction finally began in 2012.  It opened to the public on 14 November, 2015.  These pictures were taken on Sunday of opening weekend.

The new wooden clad pedestrian / cycling bridge connecting the old lagoon area to the new foreshore area.

Looking south toward Mangere Bridge.  The plantings and hard landscaping have been very well done.

I do like a time-lapse video!  This one shows the reclamation progress compiled from several different cameras.
